People, who are planning to replace the pneumatic cylinder with an electric cylinder, they must know its pros and cons. It is not possible that every operation of electric cylinder would be better than the pneumatic cylinders. You might be thinking to do so because you don’t want to spend money over compressed air.
Of course the air cylinders are not perfect in many ways, but there are also cons of using the electric cylinders. You should check the difference, benefits and disadvantages of both components before taking any decision.
A wrong decision can cost you much larger than the cost you are paying today to maintain the operation of pneumatic cylinders.
How do they work?
The working way of both cylinders is explained:
The pneumatic cylinder seems like a hollow cylinder in which a piston moves. An external air compressor is used to move the piston inside the cylinder.
The piston starts moving along the axis of the cylinder as the pressure increases. It creates a reciprocating force, which is transmitted to other components of the machine. The air pneumatic cylinder uses a spring force to retract the cylinder in its initial position.
- Electric cylinders:
The electric cylinders turn the electrical power into torque. This cylinder comprises an electric motor that moves the lead screw.
The screw never moves with the rotation and when the screw rotates, the nut drives with respect to the threads. In whatever direction the screw is moving, the actuator will move with it and then returns to its original position.
The benefits of both cylinders are:
- Pneumatic cylinders:
A pneumatic cylinder seems quite beneficial due to its properties, workability and features. The piston inside a pneumatic cylinder actuator moves due to compressed air.
An air compressor is installed along with the cylinder to provide compressed air. This cylinder does not make noise, when the piston moves. These guys manufacture their own cylinders.
The linear force producing operation goes smoothly. The pneumatic cylinders can work at higher speeds than electric cylinders.
- Electric cylinders:
Electricity is the main source of power in electric cylinders. This cylinder offers the best precision-control positioning. The user can easily network and reprogram the electric actuator for required operations.
The electric cylinders are considered the best for immediate feedback. Electric cylinders also don’t make any sort of noise during the operation.
Whenever a person decides to switch the linear force producing component, the first thing he checks is the price of the new component. You would be amazed that electric cylinder costs quite higher price than the pneumatic cylinder.
Of course, there would be no matter of cleanliness, but the risk of spark would be there. Both, mini pneumatic cylinder and large cylinder, never cause any sort of damage.
The electric actuator may cause damage due to risk of spark. If the machine stops working, you may need to call an expert in the repair work. It will consume essential time and money.
In other words, replacing a pneumatic cylinder with an electric cylinder is not a good idea.
